2025 Market Estimates Presented at SANA

From 21 to 23 February, Sana returned for its 38th edition.

The Sana trade fair was held in Bologna from 21 to 23 February, over three days instead of the “usual” four.
This year the event was held concurrently with the Slow Wine fair which had over 1,100 exhibiting wineries.

On 23 February the fair hosted the seventh edition of “Rivoluzione Bio,” a one-day forum bringing together institutions (with the participation of Luigi D’Eramo, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry), some of the main generalist agricultural organizations, and several organic associations to take stock of the situation. During the event, Nomisma presented a preview of its report with the first estimates on the sector’s performance, also covering the HoReCa channel and exports.

In reality, as is understandable (in mid-February it is difficult to have reliable figures for 2025), many of the data still refer to 2024. As for household consumption of organic food products, Nomisma estimates a market value of €5.5 billion for 2025, an increase of +6.2% compared with 2024.

Modern retail confirms its position as the leading channel for Italians’ organic purchases (accounting for 64% of total sales), up 4.9%, with discount retailers posting a +6.8% increase.
Twenty percent of domestic consumption, meanwhile, goes through specialist shops, which in 2025 increased sales value by +7.5%. As for out-of-home consumption, over the past 12 months 7 out of 10 Italians are said to have consumed organic dishes, wines or other beverages, and 35% did so at least once or twice a month.

In the coming months, analyses based on more definitive data will be presented. Read more →
