Agence Bio Reports Continued Growth in France's Organic Sector
France's organic agriculture sector continued to demonstrate resilience in 2024, according to the latest data published by Agence Bio, the French agency responsible for the development and promotion of organic farming.
Agence Bio is a public-private organization that brings together key stakeholders from across the French organic sector, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Sovereignty, the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, chambers of commerce, agricultural cooperatives, and organizations representing the organic industry. The agency plays a central role in monitoring the performance of France's organic market while supporting its continued development.
According to the agency's 2024 figures, France's organic sector included 86,958 certified operators, of which 61,853 were farms. Organic farms accounted for 14.9% of all French farms and represented 16% of agricultural employment nationwide.
Organic production covered approximately 2.71 million hectares, equivalent to 10.1% of France's utilized agricultural area (UAA). Oversight of the sector was supported by nine accredited certification bodies, which collectively carried out more than 300 inspection visits each day to verify compliance with organic production standards.
The French organic market generated €12 billion in turnover during 2024, representing a 0.8% increase compared with the previous year and accounting for 5.7% of domestic food consumption. Organic products reached consumers through a diverse network of distribution channels, including supermarkets, specialist organic retailers, direct sales, artisans and independent retailers, commercial food service, and institutional catering.
Beyond publishing market statistics, Agence Bio provides detailed reports covering the entire organic value chain, from agricultural production through consumer purchasing trends. The agency also makes available a wide range of infographics and market analyses that offer valuable insights into the evolution of France's organic sector.
As one of Europe's largest organic markets, France provides an important reference point for understanding developments in sustainable agriculture, certification, consumer demand, and the continued growth of organic food systems.
