At Neotron, we offer DNA fingerprinting analysis to verify the authenticity of Basmati rice, in accordance with the 2022 UK CoP. 
 
The analytical report includes: 

• The variety, or varieties, of Basmati identified through genetic analysis; 
• The percentage of the predominant variety; 
• The percentage of nonBasmati rice detected. 

A sample of Basmati rice complies with the CoP, and therefore is considered authentic, only if two conditions are met: 

• All identified Basmati varieties must belong to the official list of approved varieties; 
• The amount of nonBasmati rice must be less than 7% of the total sample.

Using realtime PCR technology, we analyze the DNA of potential adulterants. Our method targets a short region of the betainealdehyde dehydrogenase (BADH) gene, which contains an 8basepair deletion unique to aromatic rice varieties, including traditional Basmati. This genetic marker allows us to clearly differentiate between aromatic and nonaromatic rice with high accuracy. Final reporting includes the percentage of nonaromatic rice detected in the sample.
