“BioTrac”: Italy’s New Digital Platform for Organic Product Traceability

On 22 August, Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry published the decree (24 July 2025) establishing BioTrac — a forthcoming digital platform designed to guarantee the traceability of organic products. The system will be managed by the ministry through the Organic Information System (SIB). 

Although presented as a new initiative, BioTrac has been mentioned in several previous regulations, including Legislative Decree No. 148 of 6 October 2023 and Legislative Decree No. 20 of 23 February 2018. 

How BioTrac will work 

Once operational (no activation date or demo has been announced), BioTrac will require operators selling organic products — either directly or via authorized delegates such as freelancers or CAA — to upload details about the goods sold, their quantities, and references to sales documents. 

• Some information will be visible only to authorities and certification bodies.
• Other data, focusing on origin, traceability, and quality, may be shared with consumers — but only if operators give consent.

During the testing phase (with no defined start or end date), participation will be voluntary and limited to operators within organic districts. 

Challenges and opportunities

As it stands, the decree signals an intention to launch BioTrac rather than a finalized system. To simplify compliance, Suolo e Salute will recommend that the platform automatically import data already included in electronic invoices. This integration could prevent duplication and avoid unnecessary bureaucracy for organic operators.
