EU-Japan Organic Pact Now Covers Alcohol and Animal Products
The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) made official on 15 May an important agreement with the European Union that expands the scope of organic equivalence. From now on, organic products of animal origin and organic alcoholic beverages are also included in the agreement, with the consequent elimination of restrictions on the origin of raw materials imposed on Japan.
Entry into force of the agreement
The agreement entered into force on 16 May for Japan and on 18 May for the European Union. This means that:
From 16 May it is possible to import organic products from the EU to Japan by taking advantage of organic equivalence.
From 18 May, products subject to the new agreement can be exported from the EU to Japan.
Details on imports from the EU
Organic alcoholic beverages: Since they are classified as processed organic food, export certificates can be issued by any Control Body (CB) authorized for processed organic food and present in the official EU list.
Organic products of animal origin: Now, the CBs authorized to issue certificates for these products have not yet been published at EU level.
Next steps and expectations
MAFF has requested the European Union to identify and notify the Control Bodies that will be able to issue certificates for organic products of animal origin. Therefore, for imports of organic animal products and their derivatives, an official update on authorized CBs is awaited.
Impact on organic import-export
This agreement represents a significant step towards facilitating organic trade between the EU and Japan, especially for a growing sector such as organic animal products and organic alcoholic beverages. Simplification of procedures and removal of restrictions will promote greater accessibility and competitiveness on the global market.
