Everything you need to know about cargo tracking

We answered the most frequently asked questions about cargo tracking to help you better comprehend the way it works, the issues it solves, and the benefits it brings.

What is cargo tracking?

Cargo tracking is a solution which allows to monitor the location of goods (in real time) to be alerted in case of incidents and retrieve information from the field about all cargo movements. Cotecna’s solution, Cotrack®, offers securing options to reduce the risks of fraud, claims, delays or loss.

How does cargo tracking work?

The tracking device can either be attached to secure container’s doors, or any manholes/valves to avoid any unauthorized openings or be placed inside the truck, on the train wagons, or even on ship containers to monitor the location only. A transit journey is then created in the system to start recording the information sent by the device through GPS and GSM/GPRS network.

Why use cargo tracking?

Cargo tracking can be used for various purposes:

  • To secure and monitor goods in transit until they reach destination or the next border (customs use)
  • To monitor nationally or internationally cargoes from the warehouse to the client destination to prevent theft or delays
  • To maintain and monitor ambient conditions (temperature, humidity, light) of perishable goods or sensible goods (oils, cereals, medicines...)
  • To track goods within a limited perimeter (warehouse, free zone, port) to improve logistic and operational efficiency

Cotecna offers a fully versatile solution with a wide range of devices capable of adapting to all contexts.

What type of goods can be monitored?

From perishable goods to high value goods, all types of goods can be tracked using a solution like Cotrack®. Special devices equipped with sensor can even monitor the temperature, humidity or light level to monitor ambient conditions (foods and pharmaceuticals industry).

How much does cargo tracking cost?

There are many different devices available ranging from low-cost disposable e-seals to highly technological re-usable devices which can strongly secure cargoes and offer real-time monitor. Each device providing different technical features (SD card, dual sim card, battery capacity…) to fit specific context and purpose.

The investment not only depends on the chosen equipment, but more generally, it is also based on the solution operation. Therefore, it is worth considering the key steps (e.g., installation of the device, alert management, removal of the device, repatriation of the material and maintenance of the system) to determine whether they can be managed internally or if it is preferable to outsource them.
