IFOAM Organics Europe Calls for Continued Support for Organic Farming in Future CAP

IFOAM Organics Europe has called for continued support for organic farming under the EU's post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy.

IFOAM Organics Europe has called for continued policy and financial support for organic farming under the European Union's post-2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). The position was outlined in a declaration approved during the organization's General Assembly, held in Brussels on 24 June 2026.

The declaration emphasizes the role that organic agriculture can play in supporting the resilience, competitiveness, and sustainability of European farming systems. According to IFOAM Organics Europe, organic production contributes to reducing dependence on external agricultural inputs, protecting natural resources, and promoting rural development across the European Union.

The organization reports that more than 438,000 farmers currently manage over 18 million hectares of organically farmed land across the EU, representing approximately 13% of all European farmers.

Among its recommendations for the future CAP, IFOAM Organics Europe advocates maintaining current levels of support for organic farming through a "no backsliding" approach. The organization also encourages Member States to develop dedicated national strategies that promote investment, advisory services, farmer training, research, supply chain development, and consumer awareness.

The declaration further states that certified organic farming should continue to receive recognition within future agricultural support mechanisms. As a regulated production system subject to independent certification and verification, the organization believes organic agriculture delivers long-term environmental and social benefits that should be reflected in future policy frameworks.

Commenting on the declaration, Alessandro D'Elia, Chief Executive Officer and Director General of Suolo e Salute, highlighted the importance of providing farmers with a stable financial and regulatory environment to support long-term sector development.

The discussion forms part of the broader policy dialogue surrounding the future direction of European agriculture as policymakers prepare the next phase of the Common Agricultural Policy, balancing productivity, sustainability, environmental objectives, and rural development.
