Organic Mediterranean Diet: New Study Reveals Greater Health Benefits
The Mediterranean diet is healthy. If it's organic, it's even better. Presentation of the results of the IMOD research by the University of Rome Tor Vergata
AssoBio, FederBio and Consorzio il Biologico support the IMOD (Italian Mediterranean Organic Diet) study by the University of Tor Vergata, which compares the value of the two diets (Mediterranean and organic) measuring food safety (by analysing the level of exposure to harmful substances such as pesticides and heavy metals, including in body composition and in the reduction of oxidative stress) to ascertain whether or not an organic Mediterranean diet has greater benefits for human health.
The main objective of the research project is to determine the influence of the quality of an organic diet compared to a conventional diet on the gut microbiota.
This is because there is scientific consensus that the variety and quality of the microorganisms that inhabit our digestive system has an impact on health, not only influencing our resistance to pathogens, but even regulating cognitive functions.
The research focuses on 15 subjects on whom a large amount of data has been collected, including through advanced technologies such as DNA sequencing for the study of intestinal microbiota and the analysis of oxidative stress biomarkers. Given the breadth of the data collected and analysed, the study is one of the most comprehensive at international level.
The detailed results will be presented at a public meeting to be held in Rome on 16 September at 10 a.m. at the “Spazio Sette” bookshop (Via dei Barbieri 7).
